Yutaro Zan Karnalachi

Conceptual research, contemporary materiality, and the convergence of art, critical thought, and technology.

Biography

Yutaro Zan Karnalachi (Osaka, Japan, 13 May 1994) is a 32-year-old Japanese visual artist whose practice unfolds at the intersection of conceptual research, contemporary materiality, and the convergence of art, critical thought, and technology. Born in Osaka and academically trained across Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, his trajectory reflects a global artistic vision deeply rooted in Eastern aesthetic traditions.

Karnalachi studied art history and critical theory at the Courtauld Institute of Art, where he developed a rigorous understanding of modern and contemporary artistic discourses. He later obtained a Master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he expanded his practice through interdisciplinary approaches integrating experimental processes, material research, and technological reflection within contemporary art.

His work is characterized by a reflective engagement with form and surface, exploring notions of perception, cultural memory, and temporality. Through painting, installation, and process-based practices, the artist creates spaces of contemplation that dialogue with both Japanese minimalist sensibilities and global contemporary concerns. His visual language occupies a terrain in which the conceptual and the sensorial converge, inviting viewers into a slow, critical experience.

He has presented his work in a range of international galleries, including Kasaku Gallery in Osaka, White Glass Gallery in London, and Galería Hilario Galguera in Mexico City, establishing an active presence across artistic circuits in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. These exhibitions have enabled his work to engage with diverse cultural contexts, reinforcing his interest in visual translation and intercultural exchange.

Currently, Yutaro Zan Karnalachi continues to develop his artistic practice from a research-driven perspective, oriented toward institutions and museum spaces committed to contemporary thought and critical experimentation.
